WRITING Word-for-Word notes from Textbooks or using flash cards in Lower Order Learning doesn't build the deeper big picture level of understanding needed at GCSE level and above.
With Lower Order Learning you mostly ask the question 'what does each new word or fact that I am learning mean?' but miss out the ones required for Higher Order Learning (HOL) to get a deeper understanding of the whole subject and make what you are trying to remember actually stick.
Schools teach subjects but not how to revise for them which students are left to figure out on their own.
